Despite the ongoing hunt for Planet Nine and the general dissatisfaction with Pluto’s demotion more than a decade ago, there are still just eight planets in our solar system. You’ve probably seen diagrams of the solar system that place the planets in nice, orderly lines, but the truth is they’re often on the other side of the sun from Earth. We happen to be going through a period during which all the planets are visible, . You just have to know where and when to look. Mercury: The closest planet to the sun appears like a bright, yellowish star in the sky.
On Friday, security researcher Jeffrey Paul published a scathing article regarding Apple’s recent Big Sur-related security snafu. After Apple launched its new OS on Thursday, Mac users began reporting problems launching new applications off local PCs. An initial investigation showed the cause of the problem was a connection initiated by end-user devices when apps were launched. At launch, apps attempted to connect to ocsp.apple.com to authenticate. While this process is supposed to fail gracefully and allow application launch if servers are not available, the OSCP servers were available — just running slowly. This caused some users’ computers to hang for minutes at a time waiting for app authentication before launching the targeted application.
The highly anticipated PlayStation 5 is finally available for sale, but as expected it has sold out everywhere. You still have one chance to buy it today though. The Apple M1 launched earlier this week, and benchmark results for the new chip are already starting to trickle out. While these initial tests are preliminary, they still paint a very positive picture for Apple’s upcoming CPU. In Geekbench 5, an Apple M1 is capable of achieving a 1687 single-thread and 7433 multi-thread score. For comparison, the A14 inside an iPhone scores 1598 / 3995. This surge in multi-threaded performance is likely due to its higher core count (+2 high-performance Firestorm CPU cores) and the near-certainty of sustained higher clock speeds, courtesy of its larger chassis. In the past, iPhone CPUs have been heavily throttled due to high power consumption, so what we’re seeing here might represent the A14 finally stretching its legs.
If the next few decades go well, humans could find themselves living and working away from Earth on the moon or Mars. We’ll need lots of raw materials to sustain human endeavors on other planets, and a new project on the International Space Station (ISS) demonstrates how we can make space mining . All you need is a bacterial care package from home. Everything we send into orbit comes with a cost, and the numbers are not small. The cheapest option currently available, the SpaceX Falcon Heavy, clocks in at $1,500 per kilogram of payload. And this is a discounted bulk rate.
One of the most interesting questions about any console launch is how the platforms compare against each other at debut and how the results of that comparison impact system uptake. In 2013, Microsoft tried to zig when Sony zagged at got shellacked by it, to the point that Microsoft considered killing Xbox altogether. The company learned from its mistake, and both the Xbox One X and the Xbox Series X pack more firepower than their equivalent PlayStation counterpart, at least on paper. The Xbox One X is a proven system and has often been at least modestly faster than the PS4 Pro in head-to-head match-ups, but we haven’t seen any data on the PlayStation 5 versus Xbox Series X, and the first game match-up is a bit stranger than we would have expected.
Intel made several announcements as part of its unveil of OneAPI Gold and a new GPU product intended for the video processing / Android cloud gaming market. First up: the new Intel Server GPU. This new instantiation of the Xe-LP architecture has four separate graphics chips and work in tandem to process video streaming workloads, video transcoding workloads, and as a solution for Android game streaming. Xe-LP is the same architecture Intel is shipping in the Xe Max and inside of Tiger Lake. Performance reviews of Tiger Lake chips have put it somewhat ahead of AMD’s Ryzen 4000 integrated GPU, and the Xe Max is the same chip that’s inside TGL laptops, just running at a higher clock speed.
Google announced two changes to its Google Storage and Google Photos policies that will impact how some users interact with these products. First, Google Photo storage will no longer be free after May 31, 2021. Beginning on June 1, all Google Photos that you upload will count against your 15GB storage limit. Previously, photos uploaded at High (compressed) quality did not count against your storage limit. Google implies that it’s making this change to deal with staggering upload demand; the company claims 28 billion photos and videos are uploaded every week. The good news, if you want to call it that, is that this policy will not apply to any existing data stored on your Google Photos account, only to data uploaded after that time.
