New leak points to release dates for Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6
It’s getting to be that time of year when the big Android device makers release their flagship phones in quick succession. Hometown South Korean rivals Samsung and LG have been duking it out in recent years with near-simultaneous releases, but this time LG may have a few weeks all to itself. A from ETNews claims to have release dates for the LG G6 and the . LG took it on the chin in 2016 when consumers didn’t get on-board with its modular design, leading to substantial losses in the company’s mobile division. After a reorganization, the LG V20 was tweaked to offer a more premium feel and no module chin in late 2016.

This week in space: rockets, telescopes, and exoplanets
Trappist monks are pretty cool: they’re widely appreciated for their excellent bread, preserves, and beer. At the facility in the Atacama, one of their telescopes is named TRAPPIST, in homage to the monks. That telescope was used to discover around TRAPPIST-1, a nearby ultracool dwarf star. Follow-up with the Spitzer space telescope revealed that all seven of those planets orbit much closer than Mercury orbits our sun, and they all transit the star. Three are within the habitable zone. SpaceX’s Dragon has at the International Space Station, following a fluke GPS error that delayed their docking and necessitated orbiting the Earth for an entire extra day.

Google Waymo sues Uber, alleges theft of self-driving car technology
Self-driving car technology is emerging as a powerful next-generation platform. While there are only a handful of vehicles on the roads today, companies like Google, Uber, Nvidia, Tesla, and more have all tossed their hats into the ring and are jockeying for position in the nascent market. But competition is cutthroat, and there’s tremendous pressure on the tech industry to deliver real results. Waymo, Google’s self-driving car division, has announced it believes Uber stole some 10GB of trade secrets on its self-driving car program, and that it is taking action against Otto (the unit developing self-driving vehicles for Uber) and Uber itself (the parent company).

New tech support scam borrows ransomware tricks

New tech support scam borrows ransomware tricks
You’ve probably heard about tech support scams and attacks separately, but there’s a new breed of malware that includes elements of both. The latest breed of support scam substitutes a human “support rep” in place of a ransomware bitcoin payment. The current examples don’t seem to employ , but they might be just as effective at extracting money from victims thanks to the seemingly helpful person on the other end of the phone. As with many malware attacks, the new tech support ransom scams start with the unsuspecting victim downloading the software from a phony Adobe update link or compromised ad.

Major data breach strikes Cloudflare, change your passwords immediately

Major data breach strikes Cloudflare, change your passwords immediately
For years, Cloudflare has provided a variety of services, including content delivery, DNS, and protection from DDoS attacks. Its services are widely used by many different companies and websites, though it’s also been criticized for serving as an enabler to online piracy, terrorist organizations (two of ISIS’ three forums in 2015 were guarded by Cloudflare), and other malcontents. Now, the company has announced that a serious flaw in its software may have served account logins and passwords inadvertently. Given how many websites use Cloudflare, that’s a big “Oops.” It’s being called “Cloudbleed” online, in reference to the massive “Heartbleed” bug discovered several years ago.

In the case of the NES Classic Edition, it’s fast becoming the gaming emulator of your dreams. The NES Classic Edition comes stocked with some of the most popular titles from the original console, but the selection varies a bit by region. Tesla Model 3 on track for September volume production

Tesla Model 3 on track for September volume production
Good news for the 375,000 fans on the Tesla Model 3 waiting list: CEO Elon Musk said Tesla will deliver the first Tesla Model 3s to customers in July, reach volume production of 5,000 units a week in the fourth quarter, and 10,000 vehicles “at some point in 2018.” Musk made the remarks at Tesla’s quarterly earnings report meeting with analysts and reporters. Typically, Tesla early in the year projects deliveries for the full year. This time Musk said only that it will be 47,000-50,000 Model S and Model X vehicles (the two models it sells now) in the first half.

Russian man sentenced for killing friend in AMD vs. Nvidia GPU dispute

Russian man sentenced for killing friend in AMD vs. Nvidia GPU dispute
It’s common, in tech enthusiast circles, to conceptualize conflict between companies as a battle or war. This isn’t solely a conceit of journalists — read the comments on any GPU review or game performance debate, and it quickly becomes clear that plenty of enthusiasts themselves view Teams Red and Green locked in an existential conflict. Intel would be Team Blue in this example, though it doesn’t really enter the fray. There is, however, such a thing as taking a friendly (or unfriendly) debate too far. Last year, two Russian men got into an argument over who made the superior GPU, AMD or Nvidia.
