As locations for life go, the Moon would seem to be a non-starter — especially given what we suspect about the circumstances of its creation. “In the beginning,” our hypothetical sacred text might read, “The Earth was smashed by another planetesimal, Thea. This impact turned the surface of our hapless rock back into magma, may have created a shared molten rock atmosphere between Earth and Luna, and oh yeah, briefly created life on one of the most barren lumps of rock in the solar system.” It doesn’t exactly read like a bestseller — but it could’ve happened. That’s the of a study on lunar geology, which suggests that in the immediate aftermath of its formation, the Moon may have contained large quantities of water.
The C64 Mini — a half-sized Commodore 64 replica with 64 pre-installed games and a BASIC interpreter — will arrive on store shelves this fall. This latest attempt to cash in on hardware-fueled nostalgia is another B-list effort, at best — though at least it’ll avoid some of the problems associated with Commodore 64 peripherals that made the platform less than a joy to use (owners of 1541 disk drives know exactly what I’m talking about). I don’t want to make it sound like there aren’t any good games included in the list of 64 titles, because that’s not the case.
It’s possible that life in our solar system is not confined to Earth. Scientists speculate that places like Mars or Enceladus could provide evidence of present or past life, but Europa has understandably thanks to our wealth of knowledge about Jupiter and its moons. In a new study from NASA, scientists conclude in Europa’s ice sheet to find out whether or not it hosts life. Scientists knew was special from the very first time we got a close-up look at it. The moon, which is a little smaller than Earth’s moon, has an outer crust of water-ice that is covered with cracks.
Samsung has announced that it intends to bring its MicroLED television technology to the consumer market next year after demoing a monster 146-inch screen built with MicroLEDs at CES in 2018. The president of Samsung’s visual display business, Han Jong-hee, has announced that the panels will be even thinner, at just 30mm. That’s less than half the thickness of the 146-inch screen, nicknamed The Wall, which was 80mm thick. First, the 80mm version will go on sale this August in commercial and business markets, with mass manufacturing expected in September. Then, in 2019, Samsung will launch the new, thinner 30mm version explicitly intended for home markets.
Apple has identified a software bug that causes all of its recent MacBook Pros (not just the Core i9 version) to . The problem was first found by YouTube reviewer Dave Lee, who discovered that within seconds of beginning a large Adobe Premiere workload, the CPU in his optioned-out Core i9 version of the MacBook Pro 15-inch would throttle back its CPU and couldn’t even achieve its base clock, much less turbo frequencies. The result was that the new machine was slower than last year’s quad-core i7 model. Thankfully, it looks like it’s not a hardware problem because that would have been a total disaster.

We’ve all been trained not to give out our passwords, but online criminals are getting ever more clever. Phishing scams have effectively tricked uncountable people into compromising their online security, and one of the best ways to stop it is two-factor authentication. Even technologically savvy people can be fooled by clever hackers, though. According to Google, it solved the phishing problem by . They only cost a few bucks, so that’s an amazing deal. For the unaware, phishing is simply the practice of stealing sensitive account information by posing as a legitimate entity. For example, a password reset email that appears to be from your bank could simply be trying to fool you into entering your login details on a fake page.
Xiaomi is one of the biggest Android device makers on the planet with phones like the Redmi Note selling in unfathomable numbers all across Asia. One of Xiaomi’s most popular phones of last year was created in partnership with Google, though. The Mi A1 led the charge for a revitalized Android One program, and now Xiaomi has : the Mi A2 and A2 Lite. The One program started back in 2014 to give OEMs a way to launch low-power inexpensive phones with Google’s clean version of Android. The idea was to make these phones similar enough that updates would be a straightforward matter.
The CRISPR/Cas9 system, typically abbreviated to just CRISPR, has been used to edit genomes with increasing frequency over the past few years. The name refers to specialized stretches of DNA that we can cut using an enzyme (Cas9) that functions like a molecular pair of scissors. The enzyme can be positioned to cut fairly precisely, but the authors of a recent study were concerned about the follow-up work done to determine whether Cas9-driven cutting and repair could be causing damage our previous measurement efforts weren’t detecting. They’ve found some evidence they were. The new research shows that edits or changes in DNA can be introduced by the CRISPR/Cas9 edits at a farther distance from the target location to be edited than was previously known, and that standard DNA tests do not normally detect this damage.
