It’s Now Legal to Hack DRM On Your Devices to Fix Them

It’s Now Legal to Hack DRM On Your Devices to Fix Them
Your shiny new phone or laptop will not remain new forever, and the manufacturer may try to make you go through its authorized agents for repair and maintenance. That can be expensive, and sometimes not even possible after a company decides your device is too old. Now, you have another option as the US government just decided that hacking DRM to repair and maintain your electronics is . This decision is a major win for “” advocates, who believe that companies should not be able to hide behind copyright law to prevent consumers from fixing their own stuff.

SSD Prices Could Collapse in 2019

SSD Prices Could Collapse in 2019
NAND prices have already been falling for the past few months, and according to a new research note, the drop could actually increase as we head into 2019. If that’s surprising, it’s because the decline was already expected to be substantial. According to , NAND prices — which have already fallen 50 percent this year — could be set for another 50 percent decline. That’s the prediction from Simon Chen, chairman of Adata Technology, who believes the continued capacity expansions underway at many fabs are fueling the potential for another major price drop. The various foundries and companies involved have been pouring money into the market to push NAND growth, as shown below:

Intel Smashes Earning Targets, Denies 10nm Problems

Intel Smashes Earning Targets, Denies 10nm Problems
In theory, 2018 has been a rocky year for Intel. The company has weathered the repeated announcement of security issues related to Spectre and Meltdown. It dismissed its previous CEO, Brian Krzanich. It’s had to announce the delay of its 10nm process and then fend off rumors that said process node was completely canceled as of earlier this week. AMD’s Ryzen 7 has mounted strong competition all year, while AMD’s Epyc server platform has taken market share away from Xeon as well. And yet, based on Intel’s actual recorded revenue for Q3, you’d be forgiven if you forgot the company had faced so much as a brief headwind these past few months.

Microsoft Expands Gaming Empire, Bringing Xbox Game Pass to PC Players

Microsoft Expands Gaming Empire, Bringing Xbox Game Pass to PC Players
During Microsoft’s last conference call, CEO Satya Nadella dropped a casual remark that the company will soon expand its Xbox Game Pass service to the PC. In his comments on Microsoft’s overall gaming strategy, Nadella said: [T]he thing that I’ll say is most critical when you think about gaming is having a platform where the gamers are already there. That means you need to have a platform that has a community around it and monetize as well… Xbox has the key gaming community and the monetization capabilities. Whether it’s first-party games or third-party games, we are best-in-class in that monetization and that’s what’s reflected in the results… Obviously, bringing Game Pass to even the PC is going to be a big element of that.

Flyby Reveals Phaethon, Our Solar System’s Weirdest Asteroid-Comet Hybrid

Flyby Reveals Phaethon, Our Solar System’s Weirdest Asteroid-Comet Hybrid
The Solar System is full of some really weird stuff. Venus, despite being farther from the Sun than Mercury, has a considerably higher surface temperature. Uranus is tilted on its side and rotates in one direction, while its moons orbit it normally. Jupiter’s moon Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system, Mars has a volcanic bulge the same mass as Ceres that may be responsible for changing the orientation of the planet’s crust with respect to its own axis of rotation. The existence and composition of our own Moon is an ongoing puzzle we’re trying to solve, and we haven’t yet found a solar system that looks anything like our own.

AMD Reports Earning Results, Significantly Improves Gross Margin

AMD Reports Earning Results, Significantly Improves Gross Margin
AMD reported its Q3 2018 earnings on October 24, and the results are good, if a touch mixed in places. Revenue for the quarter was $1.65B, up 4 percent year-on-year and down 6 percent quarter-on-quarter. That’s a little unusual for AMD, Q3 has been the company’s best quarter for revenue since the PS4 and Xbox One launched. On the other hand, gross margin improved by three points to hit 40 percent. It’s been a long time since AMD recorded gross margins this high, and the company confirmed that the gains were due to increased product sales in the Compute and Graphics division.

NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory Is Back Online

NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory Is Back Online
October started out rough for with the failure of the Hubble and Chandra observatories in the space of a week. However, Hubble is coming back online after the team got its backup gyroscope working again. Now, Chandra is working again after NASA engineers implemented a fix for its gyroscope issues. NASA can again scan the sky for X-rays. Chandra is one of four missions in NASA’s Great Observatories program along with Hubble, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. The first three are still functional, but the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory failed in 2000 due to a bad gyroscope.
