Huawei Won’t Use Google Services Again Even if Trade Ban Is Lifted

Huawei Won’t Use Google Services Again Even if Trade Ban Is Lifted
Huawei was on-track to become the largest smartphone maker in the world a year ago, but 2019 brought with it new challenges for the Chinese megacorporation. The US government instituted a technology export ban that cut it off from Google services. A Huawei executive has now said the company even if the US lifts the trade ban. Following the trade ban, Huawei had to launch several devices without Google apps and services. Its sales have turned downward as fewer users are interested in a device that lacks things like Gmail and Google Maps. Yet, Huawei’s sales haven’t dropped as much as many expected.

SpaceX Launches Fourth Batch of Starlink Internet Satellites

SpaceX Launches Fourth Batch of Starlink Internet Satellites
After a series of weather-related delays, SpaceX has successfully launched another batch of internet satellites. This payload of 60 satellites brings SpaceX’s total count to 240, putting it even farther in the lead as the world’s largest satellite operator. Naturally, SpaceX also recovered the first stage booster for later use, possibly on another Starlink launch — the company hopes to have thousands of small satellites in orbit by later this year. SpaceX initially had the launch set for Monday, but winds forced a cancellation. The Tuesday launch was then called on account of poor weather in the landing zone.

Scientists Snap Closest-Ever View of the Sun

Scientists Snap Closest-Ever View of the Sun
Researchers have snapped the best-resolution view of the sun ever, courtesy of the Daniel K. Inouye 4-meter solar telescope. The image, which resolves features as small as 18 miles wide (30km), is an unprecedented glimpse of what the surface of the sun really looks like. Typical images of the sun look like this, as captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), in geosynchronous orbit above Earth. Image by NASA, via This sort of image shows us a certain amount of detail, but it’s missing a lot — partly as a consequence of being shot from 93 million miles away.

The F-35 Is Still Broken and the F-35A Can’t Shoot Straight

The F-35 Is Still Broken and the F-35A Can’t Shoot Straight
Americans don’t agree on much these days, but thankfully there’s one fact coming out of government reports that’s pretty incontrovertible: However awesome the F-35 might be in theory — whatever heights of achievement it might one day achieve — the plane as it exists today is in pretty sorry shape. Bloomberg’s Anthony Capaccio recently got a chance to the annual report prepared by Robert Behler, the DoD’s director of operational test and evaluation. While the latest version of the report doesn’t identify any fundamentally new failings, continued operational problems in the existing categories are more than enough to have stymied the effort to bring the aircraft to full readiness.

Google’s Unfinished AirDrop Clone Is Already Hiding on Your Phone

Google’s Unfinished AirDrop Clone Is Already Hiding on Your Phone
Sharing files on could get much easier in the near future. Google is working on a local sharing system similar to Apple’s popular AirDrop feature, and XDA managed to get it working for a quick demo. The core of Google’s “Nearby Sharing” is , but it hasn’t been officially announced. The use case for Nearby Sharing appears similar to AirDrop; you have a file on your phone, and you want to get it on someone else’s phone without any tedious uploading and re-downloading. Nearby Sharing comes with a new settings menu where you can connect it to an account, set your device name, and determine if you want to be visible to some or all of your contacts.

EFF: Ring App Sends Your Personal Data to Third-Parties
Amazon-owned Ring has been more apt to brush aside privacy concerns than other smart home companies. It has defended controversial initiatives like its cooperation with police by claiming that it only wants to make communities safer. It’s going to be harder to deflect the latest troubling chapter in the Ring saga, though. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) says it has completed an , and the company appears to be sharing a great deal of private user data with third-parties. Ring rose to prominence on the strength of its video doorbells, which were far and away the best devices of their kind for years.

The Hottest Known Planet Continuously Melts its Own Atmosphere

The Hottest Known Planet Continuously Melts its Own Atmosphere
As we peer out into the universe in search of other worlds, we’ve spotted many gas giants orbiting close to their home stars. These so-called “hot Jupiters” have extreme environments, but the planet KELT-9b is in a class of its own. This is the hottest ever discovered, and we’re just now understanding what that means. A new analysis of KELT-9b shows that . Astronomers discovered KELT-9b in 2017 orbiting a star about 670 light-years away. It has a surface temperature of 7,800 degrees Fahrenheit (4,300 degrees Celsius). That makes it the hottest exoplanet by far, and it’s even warmer than some stars.
