After several years spent trying to build their own ecosystem around EdgeHTML, Microsoft called it quits and decided to switch to Chromium. The new version of their browser, also called Edge (sometimes Chromium Edge, to differentiate it from the older version) has rolled out to general applause. There have been some discussions of how it’s arguably better than Chrome itself and some worry about what it means for the internet to have a single company (Google) in such a position of browser dominance. Firefox is the only significant alternative, and Firefox’s overall market share has been falling. In all that conversation, not much attention has been paid to a different point.

While we were all busy watching the Perseverance rover head off on its journey to Mars, NASA’s asteroid sample mission has been gearing up for its big moment. The Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx for short) has . The next time it descends, OSIRIS-REx will scoop up pieces of the asteroid Bennu for return to Earth. NASA launched OSIRIS-REx in 2016, sending it off to intercept 101955 Bennu, a carbonaceous asteroid about 1,610 feet (490 meters) in diameter. Bennu does get very close to Earth at points in its orbit — there’s even a small chance that it could impact the Earth in the next few centuries.
Ask people where they get their entertainment from in 2020, and I’m willing to bet Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, and Hulu rank considerably higher than they might have in years past. Tens of millions of people are binging old favorites or discovering new ones. With virtually no new content released into theaters or on TV, streaming services are some of the only places to find new media. Old shows, including Deep Space Nine, have gotten a fair bit of online discussion over the past few months. Netflix picking up Avatar and The Legend of Korra has been a major topic of conversation.
Credit: Kevin Frayer/Getty Images Huawei has been coasting on fumes lately, but that was enough for it to finally edge past Samsung to become the world’s top smartphone maker. However, tightening US sanctions threaten to bring the company’s growth to a halt. A temporary license that allowed US firms to support existing Huawei products , and that means an end to Android updates on many Huawei phones. Things changed instantly for Huawei when the Commerce Department added the company to its “Entity List” last year. Its distinction as an organization working against US interests meant no US company could forge any new partnerships with Huawei, and existing projects were heavily restricted.
Epic Games’ beef with Apple and Google has escalated quickly in the last 24 hours. The events of yesterday led to Fortnite’s removal from both the App Store and the Play Store, lawsuits against both Google and Apple, and lots of Twitter hashtags. Things started to snowball when Epic early on Thursday. This was an intentionally flagrant violation of both Apple’s and Google’s policies. What happened next was inevitable, and indeed, Epic seems to have planned ahead: Apple and Google booted Fortnite, and Epic filled lawsuits against both of them. Epic had the legal documents ready to go suspiciously soon after Fortnite’s removal.
One of the areas Intel focused on during its Architecture Day 2020 event was its ongoing work to improve interconnect technology in both 2.5D and stacked 3D chip configurations. We’ve talked about these technologies in the past — they range from EMIB (used for Kaby Lake-G) and Foveros (Lakefield) to upcoming concepts like Intel’s Omni-Directional Interconnect (ODI), which blends the previous two methods. At the same time that Intel has been talking up its interconnect technology, however, the company has been struggling on the front. Intel first discussed Foveros in late 2018, and in the 18 months since, it’s faced down a major 10nm delay and the recent news about its 7nm product lines.
There’s no doubt that even amid the explosive growth of the entire video game market over the past two decades, the surge in mobile gaming has been particularly noteworthy. Last year, mobile games pulled in over $49 billion in revenue, of the entire global gaming annual take. But while more and more of us are playing games on our smartphones, it’s not exactly the best gaming experience. Between the tiny screen and the microscopically small buttons, gaming on your phone can often feel like you’re trying to watch a blockbuster film through a keyhole. You lose a lot of the spectacle and basic functionality at that miniscule size.
Micron has made a pair of announcements around next-generation memory technologies, HBMnext and GDDR6X. The latter will debut with the upcoming RTX 3090, which will offer 12GB of onboard RAM. There has been talk that Nvidia might bump high-end RAM capacities (and there’s no mention of an RTX 3090 Ti here), but for now, this is the clearest indication of what Nvidia may ship in the near future. This information appears to be somewhere between a leak and an official statement; the updated document cited by Videocardz (linked below) is based on this document (). The data presented here appears to come from an updated version of a Micron report from a few years ago.
