ARMing for War: New Cortex-A78C Will Challenge x86 in the Laptop Market

ARMing for War: New Cortex-A78C Will Challenge x86 in the Laptop Market
ARM took another step towards facing Intel and AMD on their own turf today. The new Cortex-A78C is based on the high-performance Cortex-A78 architecture that ARM announced earlier this year, but with some specific optimizations and configurations intended to help the chip compete in the laptop market. The Cortex-A78C is part of the newly-announced Cortex-A78 family of products, including the Cortex-A78AE for automotive and embedded applications, and the Cortex-A78 for the smartphone market. The Cortex-A78C will offer better performance than any existing ARM chip for laptops, if only because it brings more firepower to bear. ARM laptops to-date have used chips with a mixture of big and little cores, typically in a 4+4 configuration.

Voyager 2 Probe Talks to Upgraded NASA Network After 8 Months of Silence

Voyager 2 Probe Talks to Upgraded NASA Network After 8 Months of Silence
NASA launched the Voyager probes in the 1970s, taking advantage of a rare alignment of the outer planets to fling the spacecraft out of the solar system. After more than 40 years, these groundbreaking explorers are still alive and talking to the team here on Earth. We can say that with certainty now that NASA has made significant progress upgrading one of its deep-space communication arrays. . It can be easy to get confused with the two Voyager spacecraft — Voyager 2 was the first one to launch back in 1977, followed by Voyager 1 several weeks later. Both swung through the outer solar system, visiting planets like Jupiter and Neptune.

Ryzen 9 5950X and 5900X Review: AMD Unleashes Zen 3 Against Intel’s Last Performance Bastions

Ryzen 9 5950X and 5900X Review: AMD Unleashes Zen 3 Against Intel’s Last Performance Bastions
Ever since April 2017, AMD has been steadily slicing into Intel’s desktop performance position, both in core counts and per-core performance. After an excellent parry in the form of Coffee Lake, Intel’s overall positioning weakened. The repeated delays afflicting the 10nm process node have kept the company iterating on the same architecture, a situation that won’t change until Rocket Lake arrives late in Q1 2021. The story thus far (in picture form, anyway). Up until today, Intel could still argue that it held a leadership position in areas like single-threaded performance and a number of games. Today, that support line has been cut.

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X Review: The Living Room Gaming PC I’ve (Mostly) Always Wanted

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X Review: The Living Room Gaming PC I’ve (Mostly) Always Wanted
Last year, not long after Microsoft announced the Xbox Series X, I declared that the upcoming console would “end” — I specifically did not say “win” — the PC/console war, not by beating the PC, but by At the hardware level, that’s more-or-less what has happened, and it’s particularly true in Microsoft’s case because the Xbox runs an OS based on Windows 10. Does it do what an HTPC/gaming PC does in a living room? I thought it would. I’ve recently had the opportunity to put my theory to the test by evaluating the $499 Xbox Series X as an HTPC and downstairs gaming system replacement for the hardware I currently use for that task.

Astronomers Might Finally Know the Source of Fast Radio Bursts

Astronomers Might Finally Know the Source of Fast Radio Bursts
We know much more about how the universe works today than we did just a few decades ago, but there will always be new mysteries to solve. In recent years, scientists have puzzled over the riddle of fast radio bursts (FRBs). These short-lived electromagnetic beacons can outshine entire galaxies, and we haven’t been able to figure out what causes them. A trio of new studies report on an FRB within our own galaxy. Because this one was so much closer than past signals, scientists were able to . Despite the immense amount of energy emitted during an FRB, scientists didn’t know they existed until 2007.

Musk: Tesla Was a Month From Bankruptcy During Model 3 Ramp-Up

Musk: Tesla Was a Month From Bankruptcy During Model 3 Ramp-Up
Before Tesla, electric cars were more like golf carts than the high-performance vehicles gaining popularity today. But Musk’s EV startup was always a longshot. We’ve heard numerous stories about how the company almost went belly-up in its early days, but CEO and founder Elon Musk just revealed that the company was on the verge of failure much more recently. The Model 3 almost spelled doom for Tesla, but the same vehicle also probably saved it. As with most Tesla tidbits, this one comes from Elon Musk’s Twitter ruminations. Unlike most people who run multiple high-profile companies, Elon Musk spends a lot of his time bantering on Twitter.
