It has been difficult to buy high-end PC components for nearly six months. There are a number of reasons for this, including pandemic-related impacts, the related surge in demand for all computing hardware, and supply shortages. A lot of eyeballs have been trained on foundries like TSMC, to the point that national governments have put pressure on the foundry to increase automotive chip production. AMD is one of the companies most-impacted by these production shortages, because AMD designed the SoCs for the recently-launched PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X as well as its own RDNA2 GPUs and Ryzen CPUs.
The earlier rumors that Samsung might build a factory in the United States have proven true. The company is investigating potential sites in New York, Texas, and Arizona, with plans to build a $17 billion facility. Anandtech that the foundry would be online by Q4 2023. That’s a quick ramp, if true. For comparison, Intel’s Fab 42 in Arizona was under construction from 2011 – early 2014, before Intel paused the project. Development restarted in February 2017, and the facility was declared operational in October 2020. It’s common for a new foundry to ramp up production gradually, so Samsung’s declaration that it wants to have the fab operational by late 2023 doesn’t mean the facility would be producing at anything like maximum capacity.
Ever since 3dfx debuted the original Voodoo accelerator, no single piece of equipment in a PC has had as much of an impact on whether your machine could game as the humble graphics card. While other components absolutely matter, a top-end PC with 32GB of RAM, a $4,000 CPU, and PCIe-based storage will choke and die if asked to run modern AAA titles on a ten-year-old card at modern resolutions and detail levels. Graphics cards, aka GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) are critical to game performance and we cover them extensively. But we don’t often dive into what makes a GPU tick and how the cards function.

Space around Mars is much busier than usual right now. The red planet made a close pass of Earth last summer, and numerous space agencies planned their Mars missions around this event. Now, the spacecraft are starting to show up — NASA’s Perseverance rover will land later this month, and China’s first Mars mission is already in orbit. The Tianwen-1 spacecraft , and it will land in the coming months not too far from NASA’s latest rover. China’s Mars ambitions are not new. The country first partnered with Russia in the early 2010s to deliver a robotic explorer to the red planet.
The United Arab Emirates has joined the ranks of just a handful of countries to successfully send a mission to the Red Planet. The UAE probe Hope successfully entered orbit on Tuesday after a 27-minute rocket burn slowed the craft enough for Mars’ gravity to capture it. Hope is a satellite designed to study Martian weather over the short and long term, including measurements of dust storms and the ongoing loss of the Martian atmosphere to space. The spacecraft is powered by a pair of 900W solar panels and it includes a digital camera, infrared spectrometer, and an ultraviolet spectrometer to measure the upper atmosphere.
