SpaceX is Building its BFR in Los Angeles, and Congress May Not Be Happy

SpaceX is Building its BFR in Los Angeles, and Congress May Not Be Happy
As SpaceX ramps up rocket production and rehabilitation, it’s going to need new facilities. That can be tricky for any company, but it’s a particularly difficult problem when you need to build enormous rockets suitable for interplanetary missions with large payload fairings like SpaceX’s upcoming BFR (Big Falcon Rocket). SpaceX appears to have chosen Los Angeles for its next rocket facility, and certain members of Congress may not be pleased by that selection. A new from the Port of Los Angeles summarizes an environmental study undertaken on behalf of a proposed client and SpaceX subsidiary called WW Marine Composites, Ars Technica reports.

World’s Largest SSD Claims 100TB Capacity, Multi-Processor Architecture

World’s Largest SSD Claims 100TB Capacity, Multi-Processor Architecture
Last month — last month — Samsung launched a with one of the highest single-drive capacities we’ve yet seen. Seagate launched a 60TB SSD even earlier, though that appears to have been more a publicity stunt than a shipping product; the company’s Nytro enterprise SSD landing page shows no such available capacity, topping out at 15TB. But the question of whether Seagate or Samsung deserves credit for largest SSD has been rendered somewhat moot by the claims of another challenger: Nimbus Data and its ExaDrive DC100, with a whopping 100TB capacity, at least in theory (more on that in a moment).

Uber’s Deadly Self-Driving Accident: What We Know So Far

Uber’s Deadly Self-Driving Accident: What We Know So Far
There’s no question on Sunday night, an Uber test vehicle, a 2017 Volvo XC90, while driving in autonomous mode and with a safety driver behind the wheel, struck and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Ariz. Beyond those facts, though, there is a lot of speculation about how it happened and who or what was at fault. The full investigation will take quite a bit of time, but we already know a lot more than we did yesterday, and can focus a little more clearly on the facts and what real issues they highlight. About the Accident We now know that the 49-year-old woman pedestrian, Elaine Herzberg, was pushing a bicycle loaded with packages.

Vive Pro Pre-Orders Are Live for $799, Original Vive Drops to $499
HTC has struggled to sell Android phones amid the continued dominance of Samsung and the growth of new players like Huawei. The one bright spot in its business may be the Vive virtual reality headset, but even that device hasn’t sold as well as HTC and other purveyors of products had hoped. HTC is now gearing up to launch an improved version of the Vive with . Meanwhile, the current Vive is getting a $100 price drop. The new Vive Pro was unveiled at CES earlier this year, but HTC was intentionally light on the details. Now we know this new VR headset will retail for a whopping $799, which is the same as the original Vive at launch.

Self-Driving Uber Hits Pedestrian, People Freak Out

Self-Driving Uber Hits Pedestrian, People Freak Out
Uber doesn’t have the greatest reputation when it comes to self-driving car safety, having been unceremoniously kicked out of San Francisco in 2016, and scaling back its tests in 2017 after a crash in Arizona. In the most recent incident, an Uber test vehicle, in autonomous mode with a safety driver behind the wheel, struck and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Ariz., marking what seems to be the first known instance of that happening. The incident was reported at 10pm, so it was at night. There is not nearly enough information to draw conclusions. But the known facts that the car was in autonomous mode and struck a pedestrian are damaging to Uber.

IBM Creates World’s Smallest Computer for Blockchain Technology

IBM Creates World’s Smallest Computer for Blockchain Technology
Computers are shrinking rapidly. You can build a pretty capable little machine powered by a device like the Raspberry Pi, but that’s still huge compared with latest machine. The company that started out selling massive mainframe computers has developed . Each one is smaller than a grain of salt, but it packs more computing power than you’d expect. The micro-computer is a complete system-on-a-chip (SoC) with a processor, memory, storage, and a communication module. The CPU contains several hundred thousand transistors, and IBM says it’s capable of performance on par with an x86 CPU from 1990. That’s not very fast compared with even the slowest modern computers, but it’s impressive for something you can’t see without a magnifying glass.

TRAPPIST-1 Exoplanets May Have Too Much Water for Life

TRAPPIST-1 Exoplanets May Have Too Much Water for Life
The TRAPPIST-1 system seems at first to be a good place to look for extraterrestrial life. It has seven rocky planets roughly the same size as Earth, and some of them are in the “habitable zone” of the star where liquid water could exist on the surface. Now, researchers from School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University say there might actually be for the TRAPPIST-1 planets to harbor life. Astronomers first announced the discovery of three exoplanets around TRAPPIST-1 in 2016. Then, a year later we learned of . TRAPPIST-1 is only 39 light years away, making it an excellent way to study the behavior and conditions on exoplanets.
