Microsoft May Plan a Return to Phones With New Windows 10 Lean
The latest build of Windows 10 suggests Microsoft could be working on a new Windows 10 version or operating mode intended to shrink Windows 10’s footprint and possibly move the OS into new markets — including mobile. This new version of Windows is dubbed Windows 10 Lean, and its base install is 2GB smaller than Windows 10’s typical footprint. Over the last few years, Microsoft has made several attempts to launch into new product markets, with poor results. First, there was Windows 10 Mobile, which was intended to shrink the gap between desktop and mobile operating systems to the point that you could seamlessly transfer work from one OS or device to the other.

Here’s How the Inside of Your Gaming Console Really Works

Here’s How the Inside of Your Gaming Console Really Works
Whether you own a Nintendo Switch, a PS4 Pro, or an Xbox One X, you’ve got a platform capable of playing new, cutting-edge games — but what sets these machines apart from each other, or from mainstream gaming PCs? In many cases, less than you might think. Traditional PCs are designed as generalist systems with the option to add workload-specific accelerators, like high-end GPUs. Because consoles fit into smaller spaces and are purpose-built for gaming, they can take advantage of a higher degree of component integration. Smartphones, game consoles, and PCs all use a type of highly integrated processor known as an SoC, or System-on-Chip.

5 Reasons Space Exploration Is More Important Than Ever

5 Reasons Space Exploration Is More Important Than Ever
It’s a common retort when the expense of space exploration comes up: Aren’t there bigger problems to solve here on Earth? The implication is that humanity has enough to worry about, and maybe space is too expensive in light of all these issues. This oversimplification ignores the nature of humanity, the drive that has made us the dominant species on Earth. If we want to stay that way, space exploration is vital. Here are five reasons why we belong up there. New Technologies and Research Humans did not evolve to go into space, but we go there anyway.

AMD Announces 35W Ryzen Desktop APUs

AMD Announces 35W Ryzen Desktop APUs
AMD’s and Ryzen 3 2200G are excellent APUs, but they both have a fairly high TDP requirement. A 65W TDP is fine for even a small tower, but it’s a fairly aggressive thermal envelope for the smallest systems or chassis roughly the size of an Intel NUC. To remedy this, AMD has launched a pair of 35W TDP APUs that should give system builders more leeway to drop Ryzen processors into diminutive system builds. We’ve put together a chart of the difference between the 65W and 35W TDP parts, shown below: Now, before we go farther, a word on Thermal Design Power (TDP) and power consumption.

Every Nintendo Switch Can Be Hacked, and Nintendo Can’t Patch It

Every Nintendo Switch Can Be Hacked, and Nintendo Can’t Patch It
The Nintendo Switch has been a massive success for Nintendo, shipping nearly 15 million units to date and outselling the lifetime sales of the Wii U in less than a year. Nintendo has always worried about the system’s security — the company has because it’s terrified the capability will be abused by hackers. Now, the entire point is moot. Every single Switch ever shipped has a flaw that Nintendo literally can’t patch out of the system. According to the hacker team ReSwitched, their attack , is: [A] coldboot vulnerability that allows full, unauthenticated arbitrary code execution from an early bootROM context via Tegra Recovery Mode (RCM) on NVIDIA’s Tegra line of embedded processors.

What Computers Could Have Inside Them In the Next 5 Years

What Computers Could Have Inside Them In the Next 5 Years
What will computer hardware look like in the next five years? With everything we know today, we can certainly suss some of this out now. It’s always fun to put on a cape and pull out a crystal ball, and having covered PCs for 17.5 years, I’d hope I could do justice to a topic like this one. But in this case, I’m going to cheat just a little bit when I make my prognostications. On the surface, it’s easy to make one prediction: For the most part, the hardware inside computers five years from now won’t be much different than the hardware inside of them now.

Alien Civilizations on Super-Earths Might Be Stuck There Because of High Gravity

Alien Civilizations on Super-Earths Might Be Stuck There Because of High Gravity
As astronomers look out across unfathomable distances and observe other solar systems, they often see so-called “super-Earths.” These worlds are rocky like Earth, but they can be several times more massive. They might also be our best hope of finding life outside our solar system. We’ll have to go to them, though. A new analysis of these suggests any intelligent beings on these worlds . There are no super-Earths in our solar system, so scientists are forced to speculate about the actual conditions on such worlds. The consensus is that super-Earths would make a suitable home for life because their greater mass would encourage the retention of a thick atmosphere.
