iFixit Tears Down New MacBook Pro in Search of Keyboard Fixes

iFixit Tears Down New MacBook Pro in Search of Keyboard Fixes
When Apple announced the latest refresh to its MacBook Pro, it declared that the keyboard design had been through yet another revision. This is the fourth respin on Apple’s original failed design. To date, all of the short-travel keyboard revisions Apple has used have suffered from severe problems, including jamming if a single grain of sand becomes lodged under a key. Because Apple designed its keyboards to be essentially irreplaceable, it can cost $600 – $700 to fix this issue — or at least it did, before Apple instituted a repair program. (It’s been tweaking that program as well, expanding it to cover more users.

Report: Huawei Is Losing Access to Critical ARM Chip Designs
Things just keep getting worse for Huawei. After landing on the US Commerce Department’s “Entity List” last week, multiple US companies have signaled they would sever business ties. It may even lose access to . Huawei, the second-largest maker of smartphones and a huge presence in network hardware, is better equipped than most Chinese firms to weather this storm. However, it may be in deep trouble now that the UK-based ARM Holdings has . The BBC claims to have obtained an internal memo to ARM staff that instructs employees to end “all active contracts, support entitlements, and any pending engagements” with Huawei.

Scientists Have Spotted One of the Rarest Objects in the Universe

Scientists Have Spotted One of the Rarest Objects in the Universe
When astronomers peer up at the heavens, they aren’t just looking for objects we already know to exist. They also hunt for evidence of physical phenomena we think should exist but haven’t found yet. When you add up the various factors in play — the vastness of space, the length of time we’ve been searching, and the current quality of our instruments — there are plenty of things we expect to see but haven’t actually seen yet. The rarer these things are in the universe, the harder it is to see them, period. But we may have found one of the hardest objects to find recently — an incredibly rare neutron star produced by the collision of two white dwarfs.

Scientists Create Model of Ring Around Dwarf Planet Haumea
The dwarf planet Haumea orbits the sun in the deep, dark reaches of the outer solar system. Astronomers spotted this object in 2004, and it helped usher in the formal definition a “dwarf planet,” resulting in the demotion of Pluto. The longer astronomers observe Haumea, the more interesting it becomes. Not only does this object have two moons, but it also has a ring system. Haumea is too distant to observe the rings directly, but researchers with the São Paulo Research Foundation have now worked out the characteristics of Haumea’s rings with a simulation. Haumea is 43 times more distant from the Sun than Earth, so direct observation is difficult.

Tesla Stock Is Worth Half What Elon Said It’s Worth. Time to Panic?
Tesla stock is closing in on being worth half what it was at its peak in 2017. It’s down more than half from the $42o share valuation Elon Musk last fall suggested Tesla would reach when he took the company private. (No, you can’t do predict things like that without annoying the SEC.) Tesla has had its ups and downs. Long-term investors have mostly been rewarded. But now? No one’s saying Tesla is going belly-up or, more to the point, that you’ll no longer be able to buy the only EV that matters. (In the minds of Tesla purists.

Apple Releases Updated MacBook Pro CPUs, New Keyboard Design
Apple has once again updated the MacBook Pro lineup, this time with a set of CPU tweaks across the 13-inch and 15-inch product families. The company’s keyboard also came in for another set of tweaks, alongside modifications to the repair program. CPU Bumps As part of its mid-year refresh, Apple has swapped to slightly faster 9th Gen processors for its various notebooks. The table below summarizes the changes. In addition to these adjustments, there’s a new top-end CPU choice for the most expensive MacBook Pro. Previously, the highest-end CPU you could put into the 15-inch MacBook Pro was a six-core chip with a 2.9GHz base clock and 4.8GHz turbo.

Sapphire Leaks Details on AMD’s Upcoming Navi, Including Price, Positioning
AMD has been tight-lipped about Navi, its upcoming 7nm GPU architecture intended to challenge Nvidia for the mid-tier GPU market. New leaks from a Sapphire PR manager who apparently spoke to the Chinese press (via a ) point towards a GPU intended to directly challenge Nvidia’s RTX cards — and priced to match them as well. If these leaks are true — and for now, all of the usual caveats apply — it means AMD will price Navi directly against the RTX GPUs that Nvidia launched at higher price points last year. The lower-end Navi GPU is said to be targeting $399 and the RX 2060, while the higher-end card will target $499 and the RX 2070.

Scientists Might Have an Explanation for Pluto’s Subsurface Ocean

Scientists Might Have an Explanation for Pluto’s Subsurface Ocean
We had no idea what Pluto looked like until 2015 when the New Horizons spacecraft completed its flyby. It’s safe at this point to say that the former planet is a much more complex object than anyone dared expect. It has clouds, fields of nitrogen ice, and (surprisingly) a liquid water ocean. Scientists from the US and Japan think they’ve . The idea of a liquid water ocean on came about in 2016 as scientists analyzed data gathered during the brief New Horizons flyby. Models of Sputnik Planitia, the left-hand lobe of Pluto’s “heart” suggested there was a liquid subsurface ocean driving the convection and remodeling of the surface.
