NASA’s Orion spacecraft is one step closer to carrying humans into space today. The agency confirms that all systems during the second ascent abort test, proving that astronauts aboard Orion could be safely wrenched free of a rocket in the event of an emergency. Launch abort systems are not a new idea, but Orion is a new piece of hardware. NASA needs to make sure the abort system works as intended because it’s the difference between saving and losing the crew when a launch goes wrong. The crew of a Russian Soyuz capsule narrowly averted disaster last year when the MS-10 rocket carrying it spun out of control.
The Raspberry Pi 4’s improved specifications promise significantly improved performance compared with the Raspberry Pi 3B, but benchmarks have shown there’s a snag: heat. Under significant multi-core load, the RBP4 can hit 80C fairly easily, causing the chip to throttle. This can reduce performance substantially. CNXSoft has done several articles exploring aspects of the RBP4, including a recent update on the impact of a for the VIA VL805 PCIe USB 3.0 used on the board. It’s not clear how this update will make its way into consumer hands just yet, but the RBP4 apparently hadn’t implemented Active State Power Management (ASPM) for its USB3.0 controller.

Samsung wanted to release the Galaxy Fold several months ago, but hardware defects in the first batch of review units led to an indefinite delay. Now, Samsung has to make it more durable. However, the company hasn’t decided on a manufacturing timeline or a new launch date. Samsung hoped that the Fold would reignite interest in the smartphone market, which has become quite dull as everyone gravitates toward flat glass slab designs. The Galaxy Fold was the first Google-blessed foldable phone announced, but companies have been demoing foldable OLED technology for years. The Galaxy Fold showed why those have only been demos — it’s extremely challenging to make a phone that folds more than a few times without failing.
A few years ago, AMD announced a major joint venture with a newly created Chinese subsidiary company. That venture, called THATIC, has helped fund some of AMD’s activities over the last few years (at the time the venture was announced, AMD declared a value of $293M). Last week, we covered the news that the , restricting the export of technology to these companies. Now, the Wall Street Journal has an article attacking AMD’s JV as an assault on national security. The (paywalled) article begins by claiming that AMD gave China the “keys to the kingdom, that the THATIC deal was the beginning of AMD’s Ryzen-fueled transformation, and that the entire deal ‘alarmed’ US national-security officials, ‘who saw it as a threat to their goal to rein in China’s supercomputing industry.
Astronomers have been pondering the nature of our first interstellar visitor ever since its discovery. ‘Oumuamua is bizarre — not only is it from beyond the stars, but it’s also long and cigar-shaped.
