New Zip Bomb Stuffs 4.5PB of Data into 46MB File

New Zip Bomb Stuffs 4.5PB of Data into 46MB File
ZIP files have been a handy way to compress information for easier transport and storage for decades. But the realities of 5.25-inch and 3.5-inch floppy longevity made relying on multi-disk zip archives a gamble when it came to long-term data preservation. For years, we’ve known it was possible to create a type of file known as a “zip bomb” — a seemingly small zip file that contained layer after layer of nested zip archives, such that the final unzipped version of the data set would be many orders of magnitude larger than the final version. A file of unknown provenance, named 42.zip, has floated around online for years, packing 4.5PB of data into a 42KB file by using this method.

Nintendo Unveils Switch Lite, Coming Sept. 20 for $199
After months of rumors, Nintendo has . The so-called Switch Lite is smaller, lighter, and less versatile than the original console. However, it costs a mere $199. It plays all the same games, but it’s not a replacement for the OG Switch. Buyers can choose the version that works best for them when the Switch Lite launches on Sept. 20th. The rumors, in this case, were pretty dead-on. The Switch Lite has a 5.5-inch 720p LCD instead of the 6.2-inch display on the original Switch. The bezel around the display is a bit slimmer, and the color matches the console.

Google Releases Android Q Beta 5 With Gesture Navigation Tweaks

Google Releases Android Q Beta 5 With Gesture Navigation Tweaks
A new version of Android Q is , moving us one step closer to a final release. This fifth beta is also the first “release candidate” build of Android Q. Developers can test their apps against Beta 5 and feel confident they’ll work the same way on the final version launching later this summer. While the feature set of Android Q is pretty well fleshed out at this point, there are a few new things in Beta 5. Google says all developers should implement and test dark mode, gesture navigation, and foldable optimizations. That last point seems awfully optimistic considering Samsung hasn’t even managed to release its folding phone yet.

Intel’s New Omni-Directional Interconnect Combines EMIB, Foveros

Intel’s New Omni-Directional Interconnect Combines EMIB, Foveros
As Moore’s law has slowed, manufacturers have turned their attention to optimizing other aspects of their devices. Shrinking transistor designs and building smaller chips no longer delivers the performance and efficiency improvements that it once did. Improvements in packaging technology, on the other hand, offer real potential for performance gains and power consumption reduction. At Semicon West, Intel unveiled multiple new tools in its proverbial toolbox for addressing advanced packaging questions. In the past, we’ve discussed Intel’s two-dimensional technology for connecting technology packages (EMIB, aka Embedded Multi-die Interconnect Bridge) and the three-dimensional technology it uses for upcoming parts like Lakefield (Foveros):

Apple Cuts MacBook Air Prices, Updates MBP, and Kills off the MacBook

Apple Cuts MacBook Air Prices, Updates MBP, and Kills off the MacBook
Apple made a variety of changes to its product lines yesterday, with some systems becoming genuinely better deals and a few others shuffling off the mortal coil altogether. First, the last 13-inch MacBook Pro without a Touch Bar has been axed, which means the entire 13-inch product family now includes this feature. The cheapest MacBook Pro is now $1,299, with a 128GB SSD and features like the T2 security chip, Touch Bar, and True Tone, a technology that matches a display’s white point to ambient conditions. The fact that the bottom-end Mac now includes Apple’s T2 security processor could mean it’s now more susceptible to the same USB audio bugs that have affected every other T2-equipped system.

The Raspberry Pi 4 Has a Flawed USB-C Port
One of the primary selling points of USB Type-C is that it can become a universal standard — one cable for power, data, video, and more. Not all implementations of Type-C are created equal, though. The Raspberry Pi 4 , moving from micro USB to USB-C for power. However, it looks like the designers made a crucial error in designing the board that limits which USB-C cables you can use. The Raspberry Pi 4 has been lauded for its improved specs while keeping the low price tag of the original. Starting at $35, the Raspberry Pi 4 has a more powerful Broadcom BCM2711 chip with four ARM Cortex A72 CPU cores at 1.5GHz.That chip can decode 4K videos at 60fps using HEVC/H.265, render OpenGL ES 3.0 graphics, and output 4K video to a monitor via micro HDMI.
