Hands On at the Track With the 2020 Mini Cooper SE Electric

Hands On at the Track With the 2020 Mini Cooper SE Electric
Mini is targeting urban performance over exurban range with the 2020 Mini Cooper SE. And performance is exceptional. Battery life will be better suited for urban/suburban driving than vacation treks. Mini says the SE travels 235-270 km (146-168 miles) based on European testing. Some reports say EPA range will be as little as 114 miles per charge, while US pricing is likely to start around $35,000-$38,000 based on European pricing, although euro-to-dollar conversions can be simplistic. Some of the tradeoffs stem from the car’s provenance: The three-door hatchback body is based on a Mini design that dates to 2014.

CBS Is Streaming Its Original Apollo 11 Landing Coverage

CBS Is Streaming Its Original Apollo 11 Landing Coverage
Fifty years ago yesterday, the Apollo 11 mission took off for the Moon. You can see CBS’s coverage now on YouTube, showcasing not just what happened, but how it happened. It’s the same way you, your parents, or your grandparents saw the event. I am admittedly not much for watching video. I use YouTube almost exclusively for listening to music when I use it at all. But there’s something fascinating about seeing the real-time broadcast, complete with commercials and with breaking news coverage of then-current events happening in… well, not “real-time” obviously, but what real-time looked like 50 years ago.

Nintendo Switch Controllers Are Beginning to Fail in Large Numbers

Nintendo Switch Controllers Are Beginning to Fail in Large Numbers
Nintendo’s Switch has been a huge hit for the company. We’ve heard relatively little news of problems with the hardware since soon after launch when JoyCon controller connection issues proved to be an issue for some users. It turns out, however, that the JoyCon controllers — which are fairly expensive, at $80 per set — have an issue that’s been an increasing problem for gamers: drift. It’s apparently not unusual for these controllers to begin to read input from a controller stick, as though an individual actually had their thumb on it and were pushing the analog controller in a specific direction.

Microsoft Blocks Windows 10 May 2019 Update on Surface Book 2

Microsoft Blocks Windows 10 May 2019 Update on Surface Book 2
Microsoft has been forced to block the Windows 10 May 2019 update from its own hardware, due to incompatibilities with the GPUs used in its Surface Book 2. It’s the latest self-own from a company that promised its new methods of rolling out updates and patches would result in more consumer trust and fewer issues four years ago. So far, those promises have not materialized. Microsoft’s methods of testing Windows 10 have been broken for years. After Satya Nadella took over as CEO, Microsoft made QA changes that left programmers in charge of fixing their own bugs and turned Windows 10 users into voluntary beta testers via the Windows Insider program.

AMD Will Provide a Free Temporary UEFI Upgrade Kit for Ryzen 3000 Motherboard Updates

AMD Will Provide a Free Temporary UEFI Upgrade Kit for Ryzen 3000 Motherboard Updates
AMD has once again refreshed its backward compatibility program and will offer customers who buy a Ryzen 3000 CPU without a compatible motherboard an APU they can use to update their systems. This program, which has been in place for several years now, is a solution to the perennial issue of CPU/APU upgrades not being backward compatible with older motherboards. To be clear: This issue is longstanding and has existed for decades. When CPU designers release new CPUs, UEFI/BIOS updates are always required to add support for the new chips. The reason this has been a topic we’ve returned to multiple times in the Ryzen era is that AMD made it a point to emphasize backward compatibility with Ryzen.

New Analog Keyboard Switches Promise Lifespan of 1 Billion Presses

New Analog Keyboard Switches Promise Lifespan of 1 Billion Presses
The world of custom is more vibrant and varied than ever before, but most of the switches in those fancy boards still use the same contact leaf mechanisms that have existed for decades. Input Club, the designers behind keyboards like the WhiteFox and Kira, have just to produce a new kind of switch. The “Keystone” keyboard ships with the unique SILO switches, which use magnets instead of metal contacts. Mechanical keyboard switches usually have lifetimes measured in millions of presses, but that’s just how long the contacts physically work. The feel of the switch may change over time. switches have existed for years, but they’ve always been expensive and incompatible with most modern keyboards.
