Intel may have launched Cascade Lake relatively recently, but there’s another 14nm server refresh already on the horizon. Intel lifted the lid on Cooper Lake today, giving some new details on how the CPU fits into its product lineup with Ice Lake 10nm server chips already supposedly queuing up for 2020 deployment. Cooper Lake’s features include support for the Google-developed bfloat16 format. It will also support up to 56 CPU cores in a socketed format, unlike Cascade Lake-AP, which scales up to 56 cores but only in a soldered, BGA configuration. The new socket will reportedly be known as LGA4189.
If you’re in the market for an affordable server, today’s sale from Dell will definitely catch your eye. For a limited time, you can grab one of Dell’s PowerEdge T30 mini tower servers with a massive discount. • (Coupon code: FallT30) Inside, this server sits a quad-core Intel Xeon Processor E3-1225 v5 clocked at 3.3GHz. This processor offers solid performance, and it has an integrated Intel HD Graphics P530 GPU. As a server, this system comes with 8GB of DDR4 ECC UDIMM memory to improve stability and prevent data loss, and it has a 1TB 7,200RPM hard drive.
Mindfactory, a major German computer hardware retailer, has published new sales data for the month of July. AMD has had an extremely good month, even by the standards of previous Ryzen launches. Before we dive into the numbers, the usual caveats: These figures reflect data from a single German company, not the entire retail channel. Most companies don’t publish data like this. Data from Amazon and Newegg shows somewhat different splits on the best-selling CPU cores. Amazon has AMD occupying 12 of the Top 20 best-selling chips, but only three of the parts are based on Matisse, none higher than 6th place.
In many ways, NEC can be considered Japan’s Dell or IBM. The company has a long history in the tech world and has been known for making a wide-range of products from processors and high-end business equipment to PCs and home game consoles. The company is also known for making business displays such as the , which will be the subject of today’s review, but this product gives an impression that the company is a bit out of touch with the modern market. Design NEC’s MultiSync EA271F-BK is a 27-inch display with an IPS panel that has a native resolution of 1920×1080.
In addition to the deals on high-end TVs and computers that usually grace our deals article, we also have an excellent deal on a UPS, which can be a real life saver to prevent countless hours of your work being lost in the event of a power outage. TCL equipped this TV with Roku, which makes it easy to stream content online from a wide assortment of locations. This TV also supports Dolby Vision HDR to improve picture quality and you can get it from Amazon marked down from $699.99 to $349.99. Dell’s XPS 8930 desktop comes with an Intel Core i7-9700 processor with eight CPU cores that can operate at clock speeds as high as 4.7GHz.
For the past few years, Intel has talked up its Cascade Lake servers with DL Boost (also known as VNNI, Vector Neural Net Instructions). These new capabilities are a subset of AVX-512 and are intended to specifically accelerate CPU performance in AI applications. Historically, many AI applications have favored GPUs over CPUs. The architecture of GPUs — massively parallel processors with low single-thread performance — has been a much better fit for graphics processors rather than CPUs. CPUs offer far more execution resources per thread, but even today’s multi-core CPUs are dwarfed by the parallelism available in a high-end GPU core.
Precious few consumer electronics brands are still making smartwatches with Google’s Wear OS, but Fossil is at the top of that meager heap. It makes smartwatches under brands like Diesel, Skagen, and more. Today, the company has under its flagship “Fossil” brand. The new Gen 5 watches have the latest hardware, and all the features you’d expect from a modern Android-powered smartwatch. There are even a few custom features exclusively for Fossil’s hardware. While Fossil’s new smartwatches are technically split up into several different styles to cater to both men and women, they’re all the same piece of hardware on the inside.
We talk a lot about process nodes at ExtremeTech, but we don’t often refer back to what a process node technically is. With Intel’s 10nm node now in production and TSMC + Samsung talking about future 5nm and 3nm nodes, it’s a good time to revisit the topic, particularly the question of how TSMC and Samsung compare to Intel. Process nodes are typically named with a number followed by the abbreviation for nanometer: 32nm, 22nm, 14nm, etc. There is no fixed, objective relationship between any feature of the and the name of the node. This was not always the case.
Google’s Duplex feature on phones can be a lifesaver if you just don’t have time to call and set up a reservation for yourself. A similar feature coming to select Android phones could be a real lifesaver, though. Automated 911 calls will soon be able to and relay your exact location without you saying a word. While the new emergency calling feature is similar to Duplex, you don’t initiate it the same way. Duplex is built into Assistant, so you just ask it to call someplace and that all happens in the background. The automated call for help is part of the Google Phone app.
