Companies exist to make money for the owners and shareholders, and they’ll often do it at the expense of basic morality and common sense. That’s why the rise and fall of Tumblr is so perplexing. Verizon has , the owner of WordPress for a mere $3 million. Just a few years ago, the site was worth $1.1 billion. That means under the stewardship of Yahoo and Verizon, Tumblr has lost a whopping 99.8 percent of its value. How can a web property go from being worth more than Facebook paid for Instagram to (comparatively) worthless? Tumblr was one of the early, high-profile acquisitions by Yahoo after former Googler Marissa Mayer took the helm.
AMD has published a blog post discussing how temperatures and thermals are calculated on its Navi GPUs. There has been some concern in the enthusiast community about the temperatures posted by reference cards, given that these GPUs can report thermal junction temps of up to 110 degrees Celsius. This is substantially hotter than the old temperature of 95 C, which used to be treated as a thermal trip point. Beginning with Radeon VII, AMD made significant changes to how it measures temperature across the GPU die. In the past, AMD , “the GPU core temperature was read by a single sensor that was placed in the vicinity of the legacy thermal diode.

There’s an odd rumor going around that AMD has killed off its reference RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT GPU designs, or that it intends to do so once AIB’s custom cards are in-market. It started with French site Cowcatland, which ran the following headline: The translation of that headline states that AMD’s reference GPUs for the 5700 and 5700 XT have both reached EOL status only five weeks post-launch. It’s not true. According to AMD, the goal and point here are not to compete with AIB partners. “We expect there will continue to be strong supply of Radeon RX 5700 series graphics cards in the market, with multiple designs starting to arrive from our AIB partners,” AMD said.

A little over two years ago, Minecraft developer Mojang announced that Minecraft would be receiving an awesome, amazing, incredible graphics update. The new Super Duper Graphics Pack (we didn’t name it) was supposed to introduce a swath of new graphics features, including 4K textures, rippling water, cleaner lines, a different lighting engine, dynamic shadows, edge highlighting, and directional lighting. The video showing off the improvements was a hit back at E3 2017, and questions about when the update would be released have popped up on the Minecraft subreddit from time to time ever since. Today, Mojang declared the Super Duper Graphics Pack update is canceled, permanently.
Throughout all of modern computing history, passwords have been the primary method of securing data. The problems with passwords are numerous, but things are slowly changing with biometrics, hardware security keys, and so on. Google is leveraging several new technologies to , but only for Android users. says it has automated protections that prevent unauthorized individuals from accessing user account, but no system built on passwords is perfect. You’ll never convince everyone to use strong passwords, and some of those who do will have to write them on post-it notes. For the first time, you won’t need to use a password to access your Google account data.
Ever since Apple unleashed the term “Retina Display” upon the world, smartphone manufacturers have been laser-focused on improving display technology. In the beginning, these gains absolutely mattered. A lot of ink was spilled (some of it by yours truly) on the difference between OLEDs and LCDs, or PenTile subpixel arrangements versus the traditional RGB. In the end, OLED won the high-end smartphone display race. LCDs continue to be used in some models, of course, including Apple’s iPhone XR, but OLED technology has won the day in high-end displays. At DisplayMate, display technology expert Dr. Raymond Soneira has written a shoot-out on Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10+, and declared it the best phone display he’s measured to-date.
Bosch aims to make your car’s instrument panel a 3D display, no goggles required. Crucial warnings would be in 3D; for instance, the forward collision warning — BRAKE! — but not the current fuel level, and perhaps not a low-fuel warning. A 3D warning would visually float above the rest of the instrument panel. The 3D notification could also be used for other time-sensitive warnings such as a sharply curved road, possibly triggered only if the driver’s speed is too high to safely make the turn, or for lane departure or blind spot warnings. Bosch says the 3D warnings would not require 3D glasses or eye tracking (to determine the location of the driver’s head and sightlines).
