Galaxy Fold Fails Early on Livestream Torture Test

Galaxy Fold Fails Early on Livestream Torture Test
Samsung’s is finally available after months of redesigning and tweaking to address durability issues. The first real foldable phone on the market is still more fragile than your average smartphone — Samsung . Naturally, people are trying to figure out how fragile it is by breaking it. The latest to give it a shot is Cnet, which found the phone failed much faster than Samsung claims. The Galaxy Fold almost launched last spring, but the first handful of review units started failing after just a day or two of use. Samsung recalled them and set to work tweaking the phone’s design.

Quadriplegic Man Uses Exoskeleton to Walk, Move Arms Again

Quadriplegic Man Uses Exoskeleton to Walk, Move Arms Again
When I was a child, the age-appropriate science magazines the school would distribute sometimes had stories about upcoming medical advances. That was where I first encountered the idea that scientists might one day construct a robotic exoskeleton that could help a man to walk. We’ve covered innovations in the field before at ET, including the development of remote-control limbs. Now, scientists have tested a new solution that proved capable of helping a quadriplegic man walk again, with control over all four mechanical limbs. The work conducted at the Clinatec research center in Grenoble, France focused on two patients. One dropped out of the study due to a technical issue with the implants in question.

Google Finds Zero-Day Android Exploit Affecting Pixel, Samsung, and More

Google Finds Zero-Day Android Exploit Affecting Pixel, Samsung, and More
Another day, another security exploit report from Google’s Project Zero team. This time, the vulnerability is in the company’s own Android operating system, which will no doubt . The exploit . Google also notes there is evidence the exploit is already active in the wild. The vulnerability is part of the Android system kernel and can allow an attacker to gain root access on a phone. That means they could access data, modify system apps, track your location, and more. Strangely, Google identified this vulnerability in late 2017 and added a patch to the Android code. However, the patch was not carried over into newer versions of Android (8.0 and later) on some phones.

One Person Submitted 1.9 Million Anti-Net Neutrality FCC Comments: Report

One Person Submitted 1.9 Million Anti-Net Neutrality FCC Comments: Report
Network neutrality has been a hot button issue on the internet for more than a decade, during which time the balance of power in US policymaking has shifted repeatedly. A new investigation from Buzzfeed News details how a single political consultant managed to . The FCC would eventually use those comments as part of its rationale to repeal in America. The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) under President Obama enacted strong net neutrality rules to ensure that all traffic would get equal treatment, but that was no overnight decision. The FCC initially proposed a much weaker version of net neutrality, but public sentiment was strongly opposed.

Windows Is No Longer ‘The Most Important Layer’ at Microsoft

Windows Is No Longer ‘The Most Important Layer’ at Microsoft
Microsoft has made a lot of changes to its business model since Satya Nadella took over as CEO from Steve Ballmer. The company has become far friendlier to open source and Linux, going so far as to ship a Linux kernel in Windows and to publish its exFAT specification. It’s also recently announced a range of new Surface devices, including a Surface Duo dual-screen device that runs Android instead of Microsoft’s canceled Windows 10 Mobile. According to Satya Nadella, the changes go deeper. The writing has been on the proverbial wall on this point ever since Microsoft reorganized Windows development and put the core OS team underneath its cloud and AI organization.

Samsung’s Massive 292-Inch MicroLED TV Wall Now Shipping
For the past few years, Samsung has reliably demonstrated enormous televisions at shows like CES. These screens haven’t been based on OLEDs — instead, they’ve featured a new display technology called MicroLED. Now the Korean manufacturer has announced it’s put the Wall family of displays into production (actual model number: IW008R), at different sizes and resolutions. MicroLEDs are a display technology that could theoretically replace OLEDs one day, though OLED is finally making its own way towards affordability after being stuck in the stratosphere for years. If you know anything about LCD technology, you’re aware of its numerous drawbacks related to color reproduction, ghosting, power efficiency, and true black (Because all LCD TVs use backlights, “black” is achieved by preventing the white backlight from leaking out, not by actually turning off pixels).

Enceladus’ Deep Ocean Contains Basic Building Blocks of Life

Enceladus’ Deep Ocean Contains Basic Building Blocks of Life
If you wanted to pick an example of how NASA’s deep space missions of exploration have changed our understanding of the solar system over just one lifetime, Enceladus’ would be a great choice. Voyager 2’s observations of the Saturnian moon showed a surface that might have been shaped by cryovolcanism but provided relatively few details. The arrival of Cassini changed everything. In 2005, the Saturn probe detected liquid water vapor being expelled from the surface of Enceladus, over the moon’s south pole. Since then, scientists have studied this vapor to determine its composition and original contents. While Cassini has long since plunged into Saturn, that work continues today — and continues to yield results.

Japan’s Hayabusa2 Spacecraft Drops Off Its Last Robot on Asteroid Ryugu

Japan’s Hayabusa2 Spacecraft Drops Off Its Last Robot on Asteroid Ryugu
Japan’s Hayabusa2 spacecraft has been hanging around the asteroid Ryugu for more than a year, dropping off robots and blasting the surface with metal slugs. The Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) hopes to bring Hayabusa2 and its precious cargo of asteroid samples home soon, but first, there’s to deploy. Hayabusa2 carried several robots with it to Ryugu, and JAXA confirms the spacecraft released its final robotic explorer last night. The Minerva-II2 rover began its descent from an altitude of about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles), but it won’t reach the surface until early next week. After releasing the lander, Hayabusa2 moved back up to a higher orbit to monitor the robot’s progress.
