The US Department of Energy has announced that the Summit supercomputer will be used to attempt to find a treatment or cure for Covid-19, also known as coronavirus. Summit is a 10KW machine built with 4,608 processing nodes. Each node contains 2x Power9 CPUs at 3.07GHz and six Nvidia Volta V100 GPUs. It’s the fastest supercomputer on Earth, with a demonstrated performance of 148.6 petaFLOPS in Linpack and peak performance of over 200 petaFLOPS. The reason the DoE is tapping the world’s fastest supercomputer for the project is that trying to find methods of inhibiting or attacking a virus is a computationally taxing problem.

And in addition to being thoroughly checked, cleaned and slapped with a minimum 90-day warranty, they also come with savings of hundreds of dollars off their still boxed cousins.
NASA’s OSIRIS-REx probe is about to make history, but the agency isn’t taking any chances. In the coming months, OSIRIS-REx will descend to the surface of the asteroid Bennu to pick up a sample, but NASA wants to get a closer look at the area before sending the spacecraft swooping down. OSIRIS-REx has just completed its , just 820 feet (250 meters) from the surface. The scientists behind were met with the same problem as JAXA researchers running Japan’s Hayabusa2 mission: asteroids are much less smooth than we expected. The surfaces of both space rocks are strewn with boulders and outcroppings that could cause damage to a space probe attempting to reach the surface.
Researchers with the security firm Positive Technologies have discovered a significant flaw in Intel chipsets dating back at least five years. The flaw is reportedly completely unfixable because it’s hard-coded into the mask ROM, making it impossible for Intel to update. It may also allow hackers to bypass any downstream attempt to secure the machine, including secondary processors like Apple’s T2 security chip. The flaw Positive Technologies found is in Intel’s Converged Security and Management Engine (CSME), which is fundamental to the boot authentication process. Features like Intel’s DRM implementation, Intel Identity Protection, and Intel’s TPM all rely on the CSME.
