The $699 Samsung Galaxy S20 FE: Budget Phone, Flagship Features

The $699 Samsung Galaxy S20 FE: Budget Phone, Flagship Features
Samsung released the Galaxy S20 family last spring, and the reviews were mixed. Actually, “mixed” is probably too kind. We were all openly mystified at Samsung’s decision to charge $1,400 for the Galaxy S20 Ultra with its disappointing camera array. In some ways, the is a do-over. It’s even cheaper than the base model Galaxy S20, but it keeps most of the flagship features, including the Snapdragon 865, 5G, and the 120Hz display refresh. It also comes in some delightful colors for just $699. At a glance, the S20 FE looks like any of the existing S20 variants. There’s the edge-to-edge OLED panel, a small hole-punch camera, and the rectangular camera array on the back.

We Just Found the User Manual for the First Digital Computer Ever Built

We Just Found the User Manual for the First Digital Computer Ever Built
These days, losing the manual for some piece of electronics you’ve purchased is notable mostly because you had a printed document to lose in the first place. In the dead-tree dominated days of yore, of course, this was less true. Documentation loss is a major problem in the effort to understand old computer systems, and it’s part of what drives ongoing data preservation efforts across the industry. Until recently, the Zuse Z4 could have been a poster child for this sort of problem. The Z4 was the brainchild of Konrad Zuse, a German who deserves to be better known than he is for his early, groundbreaking work.

Famous Black Hole Shows Its Wobbly Past in New Movie

Famous Black Hole Shows Its Wobbly Past in New Movie
The release of the in 2019 was a watershed moment for science, but there’s still more work to do. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) team is still planning future observations, but it’s also looking at old data to strengthen our understanding of how black holes work. The fruit of that labor is . Black holes are the collapsed remains of massive stars, and they were predicted by Einstein’s general relativity long before we ever found evidence of them. However, we could only infer the presence of the black hole from X-ray emissions and gravitational effects. Imaging the supermassive black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy in 2019 (based on data from 2017) was an incredible accomplishment and yet more confirmation of general relativity.

Nuvia Raises $240M for CPU Development, Releases New Details

Nuvia Raises $240M for CPU Development, Releases New Details
We’ve been following some of the smaller CPU vendors like Nuvia and Ampere that have emerged as potential challengers to x86 in the hyperscale server industry. This time around, Nuvia is the news — I’ll spare you the pun — for raising a massive $240M in funding as it seeks investor support to challenge companies like Intel and AMD. Funding rounds aren’t the sort of thing we cover much at ET, but I had the opportunity to chat with John Bruno, SVP of Nuvia, and a previous SoC and chip developer with Google, Apple, AMD, and ATI. One question that’s been on my mind, since Nuvia announced its , is this: Is the company betting its performance on the ARM architecture, specifically?

Astronomers Find ‘Pi Planet’ With 3.14-Day Orbit
The longer we study the universe, the more exoplanets we find. Many of these discoveries are notable because of how Earth-like they are or because of the number of planets crammed into a single solar system. The rocky planet K2-315b, on the other hand, is notable because of its orbital period. It to complete an orbit of its star. Astronomers have therefore dubbed it “pi planet.” The planet’s name gives a hint of its origins. This is the 315th exoplanet discovered in the data from the Kepler K2 mission. That was the second phase of Kepler’s life after several of its components failed, limiting its ability to remain pointed in any one direction.

There’s No Such Thing as ‘Huang’s Law’
Over the past decade, Nvidia has more or less invented the modern AI and machine-learning market. The company continues to make remarkable strides generation-on-generation and Ampere’s performance per dollar is very good. Nvidia currently has no serious competition in the GPU AI market. But — having said all that — there’s no such thing as “Huang’s Law.” That’s the appellation assigned to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Christopher Mims. So, what is Huang’s Law? Well, it’s a misunderstood definition of Moore’s Law, but with the name “Huang” in front of it instead of “Moore.” Specifically: “I call it Huang’s Law, after Nvidia Corp.
