Intel’s Iris Xe Max Discrete GPU Is Slower Than the Integrated Version

Intel’s Iris Xe Max Discrete GPU Is Slower Than the Integrated Version
The first thing I want to say here is that the Intel Iris Xe Max is not marketed as a gaming GPU, even though it’s a discrete solution. It is, however, identical to the well-received 11th Gen integrated GPU, and should therefore have at least some basic gaming capabilities. Our sister site PCMag recently took a and what they found was rather odd. The Iris Xe Max is Intel’s first discrete GPU in many years and it sports 768 cores, 48 TMUs, and 24 ROPS (768:48:24). It uses LPDDR4X to keep power consumption down, instead of GDDR, and it offers a 128-bit memory bus, with a 4GB RAM buffer.

Intel Announces New Optane Drives, 3D NAND SSDs
Intel has announced a wave of new storage products intended for multiple markets, from enterprise to consumer hardware. There’s a lot of new drives being announced, including: SSD D7-P5510: Data center drive using NVMe, built with 144-layer TLC SSD D5-P5316: Data center drive using NVMe, built with 144-layer QLC SSD 670p: Consumer drive using NVMe, built with 144-layer QLC. And the Optane drives: Optane SSD P5800X: Data center drive, 2nd Gen Optane Optane Memory H20: Successor to the H10, pairs 144-layer QLC NAND with 3DXPoint. Unclear if this drive uses 1st-gen or 2nd-gen Optane. Optane PM 300 Series: Crow Pass: 3D XPoint DIMMs (2022)

IBM, Fujifilm Set New Areal Density Record With 580TB Tape Cartridge

IBM, Fujifilm Set New Areal Density Record With 580TB Tape Cartridge
Fujifilm and IBM have announced a world record in new tape storage density. According to the two companies, breakthroughs like this are necessary if the world’s storage capacity is going to keep up with the demands of future systems. The global “datasphere” — the total amount of information created, captured, copied, and consumed in a given year — is expected to rise from an estimated 33ZB (zettabytes) in 2018 to 175ZB in 2025, according to estimates from IDC. That’s a much larger figure than the total amount of storage that will ship in 2025 because IDC’s definition also counts data consumption.

Google Will Officially Support Installing Chrome OS on Your Old Computer

Google Will Officially Support Installing Chrome OS on Your Old Computer
You don’t have to put a computer out to pasture when it gets too old to competently run Windows. For the last few years, Neverware has offered the tools to transform old PCs into Chrome OS devices. However, this process wasn’t official until now. Google , and its CloudReady installer is becoming an official Chrome OS offering. Google’s Chrome OS doesn’t require as much horsepower as Windows or a full Linux distro, so you can install it on modest hardware and still get a good feature set. Chrome OS is fully open source, but Google doesn’t provide tools to install it on unofficial hardware.

Apple’s M1 Crushes Windows on ARM in 64-bit Benchmarks

Apple’s M1 Crushes Windows on ARM in 64-bit Benchmarks
Now that Microsoft’s Windows on ARM emulation layer can also run 64-bit x86 code, inevitably there will be questions as to how it compares with the Apple M1. Qualcomm’s 8cx platform and its minimal refresh earlier this fall have never been known for speed — these chips have been sold on the basis of excellent battery life, not pure performance. Even with that said, the M1 eats Windows on ARM-powered laptops for breakfast. That’s the conclusion after comparing the Snapdragon 8cx against the M1, with a Core i5 (4C/8T, 1GHz base, 3.6GHz boost) machine tossed in for good measure.
