Genealogy firm MyHeritage has launched an online tool called that can animate your old family photos — or really, any photo with a face. It’s both fascinating and deeply unsettling at times. MyHeritage didn’t develop this tool itself. It partnered with an Israeli company called D-ID, which specializes in generating AI fices. With traditional deepfake content, you want the artificial face to be able to mimic anything the “real” face does.

A new report indicates TSMC’s 3nm process node is still on track, with plans to move into risk production in 2021. Apple is said to have already locked in most of TSMC’s early 3nm capacity. Multiple sites are repeating the idea that this represents an acceleration of TSMC’s previous roadmap. This is not true. Data the company presented at ISSCC in February 2021 aligns with the information presented at HotChips in 2020, namely: 3nm is on-track for risk production in 2021, with volume manufacturing to follow in 2022. “Risk production” is when a foundry begins building hardware on a new node, but is still ironing out the kinks.
The NASA Perseverance rover touched down on Mars last month, kicking off what we all hope will be many years studying the red planet. Perseverance isn’t the only robot in that part of the solar system. The ESA’s Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) is one of several missions looking down at the surface, and it has on the floor of Jezero Crater. That’s it in the image above. Perseverance touched down in the crater on February 18th, and it has yet to take its first drive. With the rover stationary, it was a simple matter for the TGO to snap a picture of that region on February 23rd.
Intel has announced the end of its Performance Tuning Protection Plan (PTPP). An end-user who previously bought a PTPP from Intel was guaranteed a one-time replacement CPU if they fried their chip by overclocking it, provided the chip was still within warranty. The program has existed since the Sandy Bridge era, but Intel is , effective immediately. All previously purchased plans will still be honored. Intel claims that it’s discontinuing the program because customers “increasingly overclock with confidence” and that demand for the product has dropped as a result. This does not apply to the Xeon W-3175X, which is overclocking-unlocked and guaranteed out of the gate.
