SpaceX has been working on its new heavy-lift rocket for the past few years, and the company has been good enough to stream all of the tests live. Naturally, we’ve seen the Starship blow up a few times because space is hard. Most recently, the Starship SN10 prototype landed after its high-altitude test flight only to . Now we know a bit about why that happened and how SpaceX aims to solve this problem with SN11. Like the Falcon 9, SpaceX intends to make the Starship a reusable vehicle. That means the vessel has the ability to land vertically either on a floating platform or on a standard launchpad.
MSI has launched an experiment to test how much cryptocurrency revenue one of its laptops can generate. According to the company, it’s using a GE76 Raider and will report how much revenue it earned from the machine at the end of a one-month test. MSI’s announcing this test does double-duty as an introduction to cryptocurrency mining, with step-by-step instructions for how to get started. This is not a great development. Cryptocurrency Mining Is Destroying the Consumer GPU Market The first cryptocurrency boom almost killed AMD’s GPU business. AMD GPU prices skyrocketed while Nvidia cards were readily available at MSRP.
A new report on the state of the graphics market finds that the space grew briskly in 2020 compared with 2019, but the growth wasn’t evenly distributed. While the numbers vary depending on whether you consider the entire GPU market (which includes Intel) or just the discrete desktop space, Intel and Nvidia were the overall winners. AMD’s numbers took a hit in both. This report comes from Jon Peddie Research, which tracks discrete GPU sales as well as the overall market. Intel was the big winner in the overall market. This tracks with what we know was happening in Q4 2020.
I like to imagine that there’s a sign someplace inside Microsoft’s HQ that tracks the number of days since the company screwed up a Windows update. It’s time to reset the counter to zero — it has now been zero days since Microsoft rolled out a busted update to Windows 10. A new security update is on computers when they attempt to use certain brands of printers, Windows Latest reports. As if printers and Windows updates weren’t annoying enough already, they have now joined forces. The update, known as KB5000802, began rolling out in the past few days. There are a huge number of Windows 10 devices around the world with very diverse hardware, so a few bugs are understandable.
The devastating snowstorm that hit Texas in mid-February killed at least 70 people and set record cold temperatures all across the state. Insufficiently winterized power infrastructure failed, plunging millions of people into darkness. Houses burned as homeowners attempted to light fires in dirty chimneys. A number of video game companies reached out to help their employees through the rocky time, including EA, Aspyr, Owlchemy, Certain Affinity, and Activision-Blizzard. Cloud Imperium Games also made public claims about helping to support its employees through a difficult time, but multiple people who work at the company have claimed this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Today is March 10, or Mar10 as Nintendo fans prefer to write it. Nintendo is celebrating the holiday by pushing deals out on many of its games with the release of a new red and blue colored Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s new Mario Red and Blue Edition switch consoles is decorated in Mario colors and comes with a matching carrying case bundled in. Google launched Chrome OS a decade ago with a device you couldn’t even buy called the CR48. Now, you can get Chrome OS laptops from numerous manufacturers for a pittance, and they’re selling better than Apple computers. Google is with the launch of version 89, which includes a phone hub, clipboard manager, improved virtual desktops, and more. Google designed Chrome OS to be based almost entirely around the browser. That meant there were no apps available aside from Chrome extensions. Google has since expanded Chrome OS to support both Android and Linux apps, but the browser is still the main event.
