There are several market forces driving up the price, but the only one Nvidia can address is crypto mining. After launching the RTX 3060 with capped hash rate to limit its attractiveness to miners, Nvidia has announced it will . The value of cryptocurrencies has exploded over the past years, and GPUs are ideal for mining one of the most popular: Etherium. With miners snapping up the already limited supply of RTX 3000 Ampere-based cards, prices have reached certifiably insane levels.
Ever since the M1 debuted last year, a question has hung over the PC market: What’s the big brother look like? The M1 is a great CPU as far as performance-per-watt is concerned, but the fact that it offers just four high-performance cores limits the market it can address. If new reports are accurate, however, those limits are coming down fast. Bloomberg that Apple is prepping multiple new M-class variants for different markets. We don’t know how Apple is branding the CPUs, but we’ve heard “M2” floated recently. For the past few years, Intel has had to split its mobile stack between 10nm CPUs optimized for power consumption with best-in-class integrated graphics, and high-end 14nm CPUs optimized for maximum performance, with a weaker iGPU. This left the company hopping a bit from foot to foot when it came to explaining why some 10th Gen mobile CPUs were better for gaming while others were best for compute. The eight-core Tiger Lake-H CPUs you can buy today are Intel’s solutions to this problem. Quad-core Tiger Lake CPUs, which , were lauded for their performance and battery life improvements relative to Ice Lake, but Intel hadn’t replaced the higher TDP parts until the launch of these eight-core and six-core Tiger Lake chips.
When Apple launched the M1, one of the persistent critiques from end-users was how responsive the CPU felt, even during ordinary desktop usage. Now, a macOS developer has found clues to how Apple pulled off the improvement. It isn’t a matter of boosting CPU performance, at least not exactly. What Apple has done is change how iOS responds to quality-of-service (QoS) metrics and how workloads are scheduled on the chip. Dr. Howard Oakley is an author, Mac developer, and former Royal Navy Surgeon. He’s recently about his comparisons between an M1-powered Mac and his Xeon-based Mac Pro, and how differently macOS behaves on the two machines.
