Adobe Begins a Much-Needed Overhaul of Premiere Pro’s UI

Adobe Begins a Much-Needed Overhaul of Premiere Pro’s UI
Adobe’s Premiere Pro is one of those applications that elicits groans from many users. On the one hand, it is one of the most powerful and popular video editing tools for creative professionals. On the other, someone firing it up for the first time would be forgiven for thinking they’d just landed on a foreign planet. The learning curve continues steeply from there. Now, Adobe has finally taken some major, positive, steps to do something about it. Learning from the much more straightforward user interface in its own Premiere Rush, Adobe has begun an overhaul of Premiere Pro, starting with the project creation, import, and export functionality.

Far Beyond the Stars: Improving Motion, Image Quality in the DS9 Upscale Project

Far Beyond the Stars: Improving Motion, Image Quality in the DS9 Upscale Project
It’s been nine months since my last Deep Space Nine Upscale Project update, where I am using various AI-based tools to remaster Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The methods and scripts I am publishing today fix motion problems and visual errors that the original Orinoco and Rio Grande encode methods did not resolve. I’m retiring the 60fps Orinoco variant for now. There no longer seems to be a need for it. I’ve got new video clips here, but we’ll be looking at a lot of screenshots today as well. Many of the errors I want to talk about are 1-5 frames long, and it doesn’t make sense to build a tiny video clip for every single one when a couple of comparison frames will do.

Samsung Announces New, Less Curvy Odyssey Gaming Monitors

Samsung Announces New, Less Curvy Odyssey Gaming Monitors
Samsung’s Odyssey G-series gaming monitors are a popular option for dedicated PC gamers, and there are three new models today. The 2020 Odyssey release focused on curved display panels. , but they’ve still got various high-end gaming features. Not only are these panels flat, but they use IPS LCD panels instead of QLED like the 2020 Odyssey monitors. As a result, the brightness and HDR support won’t be as impressive. They’re also regular old 16:9 widescreens rather than a more exotic (and expensive) 32:9 ultrawide. At the bottom of Samsung’s new monitor lineup, we’ve got the Odyssey G3.

Notebook Shipments Dropped in May Amid Shortages, Despite Demand

Notebook Shipments Dropped in May Amid Shortages, Despite Demand
The ongoing semiconductor shortage hit laptop manufacturers hard in May, leading to a significant decline in units shipped from the top five worldwide vendors. Demand for products remains strong, but companies are still having trouble buying all the components they need to build them. Notebook brands “not including Apple” saw combined shipments drop 7 percent in May, to DigiTimes Research. The report said some vendors, including HP specifically, are facing real problems with incompatible components. This is implied to refer to low-level silicon, not the high-end CPUs and GPUs we typically associate with a PC shortage. Dell shipments slipped as well, due to shortages in the custom components it uses in enterprise PCs.

Scientists Think They Know What Caused Betelgeuse’s ‘Great Dimming’

Scientists Think They Know What Caused Betelgeuse’s ‘Great Dimming’
Back in October of 2019, astronomers noticed something strange about the star that forms the “shoulder” of the constellation Orion, Betelgeuse. Beginning that month, the star began to dim. Between October 2019 and late February 2020, the star’s brightness dropped by a factor of three. In the past, unusual brightening and dimming patterns in a star have led people to suspect the potential presence of Dyson sphere-deploying aliens, but that wasn’t thought to be in play here. Betelgeuse is a young star — less than 10 million years old — and it’s expected to go supernova within the next 100,000 years.

Windows 11 Boosts Hybrid x86 CPU Performance Over Windows 10

Windows 11 Boosts Hybrid x86 CPU Performance Over Windows 10
OS-level general performance improvements are hard to come by these days. Typically, when Apple or Microsoft unveils a new OS, they tout improved performance or power efficiency in specific scenarios. The shift to hybrid processors has evidently opened up some new opportunities to improve the user experience for both Apple and Microsoft. In Apple’s case, we know that the company pushes to the IceStorm “little” cores, to free FireStorm cores for maximum responsiveness. Not as much is known about Microsoft’s approach, yet — the version of Windows 11 currently available probably isn’t the RTM version — but there’s evidence of performance uplift in hybrid scenarios.
