At a Glance: Adata SE800 1TB SSD Review
Available in 512GB and 1TB capacities, external SSDs are set to take on the rugged branch of the external SSD market. Featuring a number of safety features and support for the latest USB 3.2 Gen 2 data transfer protocols, the SE800 is well prepared for a long fight with the competition.
Design
Adata encapsulated the SE800 SSD in an aluminum enclosure with rubber ends. The drive carries an IP68 rating, which means it is dustproof and waterproof up to a depth of five feet for 30 minutes. The SE800 also supports a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port and it’s rated to transfer data at up to 1,000MB/s.
Adata bundles two software utilities with this drive. OStoGo enables you to use the SE800 as a boot drive for running Windows or another operating system. The other utility is HDDToGo, which can be used for backing up data and encrypting files.
Benchmarks and Testing
Our sister site tested the drive’s rugged features first hand as well as running it through a number of benchmarks. To kick off the testing, the reviewer at PCMag dropped the drive into a pitcher of water for several minutes. This appeared to change nothing, however, and the drive continued to work without issue.
Benchmarking the drive with PCMag’s custom Folder Transfer Test shows the Adata SE800 tied for first place with SanDisk’s Extreme Pro. The SE800 fairs less well in the Crystal DiskMark test, however, and it falls into second-to-last place. The drive’s sequential read performance isn’t the issue, as it essentially tied with most of the competition, but the SE800’s write speed was a meager 676MB/s.
Conclusion
According to PCMag, Adata set the SE800 with an MSRP of $259.99. It appears the company has opted to reduce this price to better compete in the market, however, as it’s currently listed for sale at . This does not appear to be a sale price either, and several other retailers also have it available for this price.
Based on the drives performance and the $189.99 price tag, the Adata SE800 is an excellent choice if you need an external SSD, but it’s not the only choice. lacks the useful software utilities that are included with the SE800, but it offers comparable performance and a lower . If you just want a simple drive for transferring files then the Crucial X8 is likely a better choice, but if you want to use the more advanced features provided by the software utilities then the SE800 is the superior option.
